Dr. Michael Neufeld is a clinical instructor who specializes in primary and complex revision hip and knee replacement. Following completion of his medical degree at the University of Toronto, he completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He then went on to complete a prestigious subspecialty Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. During this time, he was trained in many modern and advanced aspects of joint replacement, including the minimally invasive anterior approach to the hip. He also completed a Master of Science Degree in surgical outcomes research with a focus on joint infection. Dr. Neufeld was then awarded the Hip Society M.E. Müller Foundation of North America European Fellowship. He used this special opportunity to gain subspecialty training at the ENDO-Klinik in Hamburg, Germany, a world-class facility renowned for pioneering the single-stage revision for periprosthetic joint infection, as well as other complex problems around the hip and knee.

Dr. Neufeld specializes in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement. He has subspecialty training and a special interest in the modern minimally invasive anterior approach to the hip, as well as the management of periprosthetic joint infection, including single-stage revisions.

He is the Director of Research in the Division of Hip and Knee Reconstruction at UBC. His research interests include access to care, infection, and clinical outcomes for hip and knee replacement patients. Recently Dr. Michael Neufeld, along with a distinguished team of co-authors, was awarded with the prestigious 2024 John Charnley Award by The Hip Society, celebrating his groundbreaking paper titled “The Impact of HLA Genotype on Bacterial Infection Rates and Successful Eradication in Total Hip Arthroplasty”. Dr Neufeld’s previous and ongoing research has been supported by several highly competitive scientific grant awards.

He is currently a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA), Canadian Arthroplasty Society (CAS), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), reviews scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals such as the Bone & Bone Journal and has given international presentations at numerous scientific meetings. He has authored several textbook chapters and peer-reviewed publications and is involved in several ongoing projects.

He is married to Stephanie Neufeld and together they enjoy the busy sporting schedule of their 3 children.
