Surgeon Bios

Dr. Don Garbuz MD, FRCSC, MHSc

Dr. Don Garbuz is Professor and Head of the Division of Lower Limb Reconstruction and Oncology at Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia. His practice focuses on adult hip and knee replacement. He has a special interest in complex revision surgery of the hip and knee. After graduating from McGill medical school, he completed his Orthopaedic residency at university of Toronto. He then completed two specialized  fellowships in lower limb reconstruction at both the University of Toronto and the Inselspital in Berne, Switzerland. He has a master’s degree in health care and Epidemiology from the University of British Columbia and is the former President of the prestigious Canadian Arthroplasty Society. 

Dr. Nelson V. Greidanus MD, FRCSC, MPH

Dr. Nelson Greidanus is an orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty interest in complex hip and knee replacement and reconstruction.  In addition to clinical practice Dr. Greidanus is actively involved in teaching and research and is full time tenured faculty at the University of British Columbia.  Dr. Greidanus is currently the Director of Continuing Professional Development and Continuing Medical Education (CPD/CME) for the Department of Orthopaedics and is Assistant Professor at UBC.  He received both Doctor of Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery specialty qualifications from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta.  Following the completion of his orthopaedic training in 1998 he received additional subspecialty fellowship training in complex hip/knee surgery at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.  

Dr. Lisa C. Howard MD, MHSc, FRCSC

Dr. Lisa C Howard is an assistant professor who specialises in primary and complex revision hip And knee replacement at the University of British Columbia Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. Following completion of her medical degree at the University of British Columbia, she completed her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of British Columbia. She then went on to complete a subspecialty shoulder and elbow Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Ottawa. Following this, she went on to complete another highly competitive and sought after subspecialty fellowship in lower extremity arthroplasty at the University of British Columbia with mentors Bas Masri, Don Garbuz, Nelson Greidanus and Clive Duncan.

Dr. Bas Masri MD, FRCSC

Dr. Masri is a full professor of Orthopaedics at the University of British and served as Department Head and Surgeon-in-Chief at UBC as well as Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospitals. He has been in orthopaedic practice in Vancouver since 1995, and specializes in hip and knee replacement. Dr. Masri graduated from UBC with an MD in 1988. He then moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where he worked as a rotating intern at the Grey Nuns Hospital between July 1988 and June 1989.  He then returned to Vancouver and started the orthopaedic surgery residency program at UBC.   He graduated from that program in June of 1994.

Dr. Michael E. Neufeld MD, FRCSC, MSc

Dr. Michael Neufeld is a clinical instructor who specialises in primary And complex revision hip And knee replacement. Following completion of his medical degree at the University of Toronto, he completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He then went on to complete a prestigious subspecialty Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. During this time, he was trained in many modern and advanced aspects of joint replacement, including the minimally invasive anterior approach to the hip and rapid recovery protocols.

Dr. Paul Clarkson MD, FRACS, FRCSC, MSc

Dr. Clarkson is a Clinical Professor who specialises in surgery for bone and soft tissue tumours. He trained in New Zealand, completing his surgical qualifications in Australia. He undertook subspecialty fellowship training in Toronto and Vancouver and now works at Vancouver General Hospital, BC Cancer Agency and the BC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Clarkson takes care of adult and pediatric patients presenting with tumours of their bones or soft tissues of the extremities, often referred to as “sarcomas”.

Dr. Jennifer Nevin MD, FRCSC, MHSc

Dr. Jennifer Nevin is a Clinical Instructor who specializes in orthopaedic oncology with a focus on upper extremity reconstruction. She completed her medical degree and residency training in Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia. She then went on to complete a fellowship in upper extremity surgery at the world-renowned Roth MacFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in London, ON. During that time, she was trained in managing trauma and reconstruction of the shoulder, elbow, hand, and wrist. Most recently, Dr. Nevin completed fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital at the University of Toronto.
